Tonight, Ramadān begins — a time of mercy, forgiveness, and nearness to Allāh. A time when hearts should be filled with joy, when families gather, and when the masjid should be a sanctuary for worship. But this year is different. This year, I, along with others, am unjustly denied the right to step foot into the very house of Allāh — a right given not by any man, but by our Creator.
Never, in the time of the Prophet ﷺ or the righteous caliphs, were people banned from the masjid. Not even the hypocrites — those whose names the Prophet ﷺ knew — were turned away. But today, in the name of preserving power and shielding the guilty, a masjid is run like a corporate institution, where those who speak the truth are censored and cast out.
This year, VRIC stands stained with injustice, deception, and cover-ups, its walls echoing with silence in the face of oppression. So, let this letter stand as a testament to the truth, a plea to the community, and a challenge to the leadership of Valley Ranch Islamic Center.
When serious allegations arise, it is the duty of the Muslim community to investigate with fairness and uphold justice. But the leadership of this masjid took a different path — a path of silence, concealment, and cowardice. They knew the allegations were irrefutable. They saw the evidence. And instead of seeking truth, they sought to suppress it. Instead of holding the guilty accountable, they punished those who dared to speak.
But the pain of this injustice goes beyond words. Being prevented from entering the masjid — my masjid, the one near my home, the place where I have spent years praying, weeping, and connecting with Allāh — has been a wound unlike any other. The masjid is not just a building; it is a refuge. It is the place where my heart has found solace in the stillness of Fajr, where my soul has been uplifted by the unity of congregational prayer, and where I have stood shoulder to shoulder with my brothers in faith, seeking Allāh’s acceptance and His mercy.
To be deprived of walking through its doors, of bowing my head in sujūd within its walls, of breaking my fast with my community — this is a pain that cannot be measured. It is a pain that lingers in every call to prayer that is heard from afar, in every night of Ramadān that I am forced to spend away from the house of my Lord. It is an exile not just from a physical space, but from a part of my heart.
To the leaders of VRIC: You are the true aggressors. You are the ones who have betrayed your trust, forsaken your duty, and turned your backs on justice. You may attempt to silence voices, but you cannot silence the cries of the oppressed that rise to the heavens. In this blessed month of Ramadān, know that every prayer will carry with it a plea for justice, and every sujūd will bear witness to the wrongdoings you have engaged in and committed.
And to those who remain silent in the face of injustice: You are complicit. Know that your silence does not absolve you. It only binds you to the oppressors. A day will come when truth will prevail, and every deed — hidden or exposed — will be brought to account.
“And never think that Allāh is unaware of what the wrongdoers do. He only delays them for a Day when eyes will stare [in horror].”
Sūrah Ibrāhīm (14:42)
May Allāh bring justice to those who have been wronged and expose those who have betrayed their trust. Allāhumma Āmīn!
